Take-Two latest financial report was dominated by the fact that GTA 6 was delayed again, its release date pushed back until November 19 of 2026. But amidst that big piece of news are other interesting snippets, including the fact that Borderlands 4‘s sales have been “softer” than expected.

Chris Dring of The Game Business has the scoop after talking to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. According to the CEO, “the numbers were a little softer than we would have liked. In the fullness of time, we think it’s going to do great.”

Why might this be? Well, Zelnick points toward the game’s technical woes on Steam has being a contributing factor.

“The critical acclaim [for Borderlands 4] was superb, and we’re really happy with the release,” he told us. “Equally, as you know, there were some challenges with the Steam release. [Developer] Gearbox has been addressing those challenges and will continue to do so.”

Currently, the game holds a “mixed” rating on Steam. Most of the negative reviews cite the game’s poor performance, crashes and other issues. Considering we are rolling into the game’s 2-month anniversary, it’s worrying that the reviews are not starting to trend upward.

Personally, I can’t comment too much on performance. I played Borderlands 4 on PC for a few hours at launch and struggled to get a steady framerate, and haven’t found the time to go back yet.

As for the game’s sales, we don’t have any official numbers to go on. The last we heard, it had achieved 2.5 million copies sold shortly after launching, but those numbers come from Alinea Analytics. Based on those numbers, it seemed to be selling weaker than Borderlands 3 which managed to sell 5 million copies in just five days, according to Gearbox themselves.

However, in October, Circana claimed that Borderlands 4 had sold 30% more than Borderlands 3 and had the highest launch month sales of in the franchise’s history.

Until we get some official numbers, we won’t know for sure. All we know is that it has definitely fallen under Take-Two’s own expectations, but how high were those expectations?
