Following the accidental reveal earlier today when it popped up on the ESRB site, Rockstar has officially announced a new version of Red Dead Redemption for PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Switch 2, iOS and Netflix, developed “in collaboration with Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games “.
This new version will be a free upgrade to anyone who already bought the game on PS4, Switch and even the Xbox One version that’s currently available on the Xbox store and runs on Xbox Backwards Compatibility. Save data for the PS4 and Switch versions will also carry over to the new version so you can pick up where you left off.
Whereas the last release of RDR was little more than a straight port with only a couple of enhancements, this release is bringing a little bit more to the table.
First up, 60FPS is standard across all three consoles. PS5 and Xbox will get “enhanced image quality”, HDR support and resolutions up to 4K. Keep in mind, the PS4 version already got updated to allow 60fps, and also ran at 4K, while the Xbox backwards compatibility version of the game ran at an upscaled 4K and 30fps.
The Switch 2 version is promising DLSS, HDR and mouse support.
Looking at the trailer, the game does look better than before, although it’s not a huge leap. So between that and the fact that the technical performance increase isn’t substantial, this update seems….well, mid. But then again, it’s going to be free for a lot of people, and will replace the old version, so we can’t complain too much.
Red Dead Redemption will launch (again) for PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Switch 2, iOS and Netflix on December 2. It’ll also be available from December 2 on the PS Plus Game Catalog.
But don’t let this distract you from the fact that there’s still no modern console update for Red Dead Redemption 2.
