Eidos Montreal Reported To Have Been Making A Legacy Of Kain “Soft Reboot” – WGB

We were this damn close to having the Legacy of Kain series back again, according to a new report from the folk over at Insider Gaming, but plans were scuppered when Eidos Montreal was bought by Embracer.

Public CVs from former Eidos Montreal employees have revealed that the company was working on a “Dark fantasy ARPG” prior to being laid off. However, Insider Gaming claims that sources have told them that the game was actually a “soft reboot” of Legacy of Kain, and that it was cancelled a few years ago.

Insider Gaming goes on to say that the project – dubbed P16 due to it being the studios 16th project – was around a year into development when it was cancelled. Despite this, Insider Gaming says that it was apparently doing well and even had some barebones gameplay.

It isn’t known why Embracer pulled the plug and sent the IP back to Crystal Dyanamics, nor, sadly, does Insider Gaming know if Crystal Dynamics is doing is anything with it.

Eidos Montreal is a studio that has unfortunately faced many hardships, including multiple rounds of layoffs and numerous cancelled projects. They’ve wound up doing a lot of support work, like helping out on the upcoming Fable for Xbox. But they are working on a new internal project that was begun in 2019. Insider Gaming’s sources tell them the project already has several hundred million dollars into it and that it’s unlikely to recoup that cost, but the investment is too big for it to be cancelled, at this point.

As for Legacy of Kain, it did make a brief comeback in the form of the original games getting released on PlayStation as part of PlayStation’s ongoing efforts to add classic titles to its playable library.
