The mysterious statue in the desert mystery was unveiled at The Game Awards, and yes, it did turn out to be Divinity as some spoilsports managed to figure out when the copyright popped up.

But the surprise being ruined a day before the actual reveal doesn’t take any impact away from how kickass, weird and messed-up the debut trailer is. We witness a man being gruesomely burned alive, public sex and more. And might I add that this trailer appeared at the same show which featured The Muppets? Bit of tonal whiplash there. Anyway, everything goes to shit when the burning man turns into some sort of evil demonic force.

On stage, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley described the game as “even larger than Baldur’s Gate 3.”

“Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity,’”  Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke said in a press release. “We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.”

The name is actually important because prior to The Game Award’s, Larian flat-out denied that they were working on a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2. The name change allowed them to get away with this white lie in a bid to keep the surprise intact. This will be the first game in the franchise’s history to be called Divinity, thus marking a big turning point.

On X, Vincke called the game “our biggest, most ambitious RPG yet”. Considering the scale of Baldur’s Gate 3, that’s quite a claim.

No release date or platforms were announced.
