While it’s still managing to top sales charts across and the globe and will undoubtedly sell a lot of copies, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has also seen a massive drop in sales, including selling 63% fewer copies than Battlefield 6 in Europe. Player numbers have also been far lower. And if that wasn’t enough, both player reception and critical reception have not been good.
It seems like Activision is acknowledging this, too. On a new blog post on the official Call of Duty site titled simple Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Update, the Call of Duty team writes: “We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully. To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.”
In what seems like a clear move to attract more players, the coming weekend will allow everybody to jump in and play for free, and it’ll be a Double XP event to boot.
But the most interesting piece of information comes later in the post when the team confirms that, “We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games.”
“The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year” said the post, explaining their decision further.
Black Ops 6 as released in 2024, and while this was not the first time that a subseries was released back-to-back, it was the first time it was done by the same development team. Treyarch and Raven developed both games alongside each other, pitching it as a good way to avoid the rushed feeling of Modern Warfare 3 in 2024. According to them, both titles were greenlit at the same time, and thus both had equal development time.
